1/ HISTORY
Campania is primarily known for its winemaking heritage, which dates back to the ancient Greeks. As a result, it is one of Italy’s oldest wine regions, with a history that began as early as the 12th century BCE.
2/ GEOGRAPHY
Campania is a geographically diverse region located south of Rome, with vineyards spread across the Irpinia plateau at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level.
Despite its prominence, Campania accounts for only 3.3% of Italy’s total vineyard area, covering 29,000 hectares, primarily cultivated on hilly terroir
3/ TERROIR & CLIMATE
- Climate: Campania has a distinct Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, humid winters. The influence of afternoon sea breezes helps grapes retain acidity through their thick skins.
- Terroir: The region features a combination of clay and volcanic soils, with some areas containing “tufo” rock, which has a white chalky surface that enhances drainage and contributes to the wines’ distinctive minerality.
4/ GRAPE VARIETIES
Campania’s unique terroir has fostered the growth of around 100 indigenous grape varieties, making it one of the world’s leading wine regions in terms of local varietal diversity.
- White Grapes: The most prominent varieties are Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina, producing wines with high acidity, rich minerality, and fresh aromatic complexity.
- Red Grapes: The dominant varieties include Aglianico, Piedirosso, and Primitivo, known for their bold, intense, and complex flavors.
5/ WINE-GROWING REGIONS
The main vineyard areas in Campania are located in the provinces of Avellino and Benevento. Additionally, Aversa, Caserta, the area surrounding Mount Vesuvius, and the island of Ischia also produce high-quality wines.
